The adhkar of morning and evening

Morning and evening have their adhkar: the words the Prophet ﷺ said at daybreak and at its close. Three for the morning, three for the evening, sourced, to begin with: the complete routines live in Mounis.

The morning.

Once in the morning and once in the evening. It is the “master of seeking forgiveness”.

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allāhumma anta rabbī lā ilāha illā ant, khalaqtanī wa anā ʿabduk, wa anā ʿalā ʿahdika wa waʿdika mā-staṭaʿt, aʿūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣanaʿt, abū’u laka bi-niʿmatika ʿalayya, wa abū’u bi-dhanbī fa-ghfir lī, fa-innahu lā yaghfiru-dh-dhunūba illā ant

O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me · for none forgives sins but You.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6306

Its merit “Whoever says it during the day with conviction and dies before evening is among the people of Paradise; whoever says it at night with conviction and dies before morning is among the people of Paradise.”

Once in the morning, once in the evening. In the evening the order is reversed: amsaynā comes first.

اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ

Allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika amsaynā, wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūtu wa ilayka-n-nushūr

O Allah, by You we reach the morning and by You we reach the evening; by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.

Once in the morning, once in the evening. In the evening the formula opens with amsaynā.

أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥa-l-mulku li-Llāh, wa-l-ḥamdu li-Llāh, lā ilāha illa-Llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamd, wa huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr

We have reached the morning and the dominion belongs to Allah; all praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things.

Sahih Muslim 2723

The evening.

3 times in the evening, and whenever you stop at a place while travelling.

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti-Llāhi-t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

3 times in the morning and 3 times in the evening.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ · قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ · قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ

Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, an-Nās

The three protecting surahs, recited together.

Abu Dawud 5082 · Tirmidhi 3575 (hasan sahih)

7 times in the morning and 7 times in the evening.

حَسْبِىَ ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Ḥasbiya-Llāhu lā ilāha illā huwa, ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabbu-l-ʿarshi-l-ʿaẓīm

Allah is sufficient for me; none has the right to be worshipped but Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.
